Job summary

Mahoney Engineering is seeking a Director of Operations to lead day-to-day delivery across our Residential and Site Land Development teams in Austin. This role offers a clear path to COO for the right leader and reports to the owners.

You will direct studio leaders, project managers and technical leads, ensuring delivery quality, budget adherence and schedule reliability while growing our team and capabilities in Central Texas.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management or related field
• 8+ years leading engineering, construction or operations teams, military or civilian
• 3+ years leading other leaders and owning a budget or cost results
• Experience with civil, site development or construction projects

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery team across residential and site development projects
• Own staffing and workload across both teams and flag hiring needs early
• Own project budgets, margins and unbilled work, fixing overruns
• Maintain backlog, staffing and revenue forecast; report results monthly
• Own delivery quality, handle escalations and maintain QA/QC standards across the firm

Job description

You've led teams, run operations and delivered the mission under pressure. Now bring that to a growing civil engineering firm that builds the neighborhoods and sites of Central Texas.

Mahoney Engineering is a 25-person civil engineering firm in Austin, growing 23% next year. We're looking for a Director of Operations to run day-to-day delivery across our Residential and Site Land Development teams, so our owners can focus on clients and growth. This is a seat with a clear path to COO for someone who wants to keep growing.

What you'll do

• Lead the delivery team. Lead our studio leaders, project managers and technical leads through weekly meetings and quarterly check-ins, and hold every team to its goals.
• Put the right people on the right work. Own staffing and workload across both teams, resolve conflicts weekly, and flag hiring needs early.
• Protect project profit. Own project budgets, margins and unbilled work, and fix overruns before they grow.
• See around corners. Keep the backlog, staffing and revenue forecast current, and report results to leadership monthly.
• Deliver for clients. Own delivery quality, handle escalations, and keep our QA/QC and delivery standards sharp across the firm.

What you bring

Military experience counts here. If you led engineers, construction or operations in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Navy Civil Engineer Corps, Seabees, Army or Marine Corps engineer units, or Air Force civil engineering, we want to hear from you.

Required

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management or a related field
• 8+ years leading engineering, construction or operations teams, military or civilian
• 3+ years leading other leaders and owning a budget or cost results
• Experience with civil, site development or construction projects
• A growth mindset: you seek feedback, learn fast and raise the standard of the people around you

Preferred

• Texas P.E. license (a plus, not required)
• Experience in a civilian AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) firm
• Familiarity with project accounting software (BQE Core, Deltek, Unanet or similar)
• Experience with EOS or another structured operating system

Pay, benefits and how to apply

• Pay: $140,000 to $175,000 per year plus performance bonus, based on experience
• Benefits: 401(k), Health, Dental, Vision insurance, PTO, Professional development and licensure support
• Schedule: Monday to Friday, on-site in Austin
