The Director of Nursing, Perioperative coordinates activities and organizational initiatives that enable VCU Health System to be recognized within the healthcare community for excellence in nursing and continued recognition as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The Director of Nursing, Perioperative is responsible for implementing, communicating, monitoring, and evaluating professional practices, activities, and strategies.

This role requires strong leadership experience and a unique combination of clinical expertise, including hands-on experience in both the Operating Room (OR) and Endoscopy. Success depends on understanding the nuances between the complex, procedure-driven environment of the OR and the fast-paced, appointment-based flow of Endoscopy. This dual expertise is essential for effective team leadership and ensuring high-quality patient care.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible in a compact state

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia

Experience REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant clinical experience with five (5) years of progressive leadership or management experience

Experience PREFERRED:

  • Experience in an academic medical center environment

Education/training REQUIRED:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited school. If the Master's is not in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited school is required.

Education/training PREFERRED:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program
  • Certification in a specialty area

All day-to-day operations of the unit are handled independently, with advice and guidance sought from the Leadership Team Director on an as-needed basis and when there is a major impact outside the unit. Actions such as daily operational functions and staff leadership are taken without prior approval. Advice is also sought for employee termination, grievances, unit goals, budget, and staff evaluations.

Supervisory responsibilities include full authority and accountability within the scope of the position and hospital policies. All nursing staff report to this position, with supervisory responsibilities delegated as appropriate.

Additional requirements include frequent visibility on all shifts and weekends to enhance staff communication and effectiveness.

Physical requirements include lifting less than 20 lbs, exposure to hazardous/infectious substances, and activities such as prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching, and repetitive motions. Sensory and mental skills such as recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking, reading, and logical thinking are essential. The environment is fast-paced, noisy, and requires adaptation to change.
