Job description

General Summary of Position

Director of Nursing Emergency Department
MedStar Health at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center

As the Director of Nursing, you’ll be part of the nurse leadership team as a decision maker on the unit, working closely with physicians and your RN staff to provide the best care and most advanced treatments. You’ll also drive our mission, focused on becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO), providing the safest, highest quality care possible to all patients.

We are a full-service acute care facility with more than 44,000 emergency room visits and nearly 11,000 admissions each year. In our renovated and expanded ED, you’ll find the same board-certified physicians, experienced physician assistants, and emergency nurses and technicians who remain dedicated to caring for unexpected illness and injury. Our facility is equipped to deliver rapid, life-saving care for heart attack and stroke through seamless coordination with the hospital’s award-winning Stroke Center.

MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is part of MedStar Health, the largest health system in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., region. Our organization’s commitment to growth and advancement has placed us on a Pathway to Excellence designated hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. As a Pathway to Excellence (PTE) nurse, you can be an empowered and engaged nursing professional that implements evidence-based practice by sharing your voice in our collaborative governance councils. PTE designated hospitals aim to elevate standards of care and nursing performance to achieve optimal patient outcomes every day, every time.

Applicants for the Director position should highlight core experience within their specialty area of practice, showcasing both knowledge and leadership skills. The incumbent will assume 24-hour administrative and leadership authority and responsibility for managing the operation, personnel, and financial activities of the unit. Directors of Nursing typically follow our leadership growth ladder, with opportunities to advance to a Senior Director level role, then to a CNO.

MedStar Health is a leading employer in the DMV area, with over 30,000 associates. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards Compensation Package, including benefits for employees and their families, along with additional perks. Our organization emphasizes physical and mental health for our staff. We maintain internal equity while offering competitive wages, with final compensation based on relevant experience.

This position has a hiring range of $118,331 - $230,172.
