POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of the Nursing Education Department reports to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Provides overall planning, direction, coordination, management, and supervision for the Nursing Education Department, focusing on staff education and education for nursing throughout the organization. Consults with Nurse Educators, staff nurses, physicians, and Nurse Executives on the organization’s educational requirements to ensure that patient and staff needs are met. Develops and maintains nursing policies and procedures. Serves as a resource for staff and management. Allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective, and compassionate staff and patient education and education throughout the organization that will lead to excellence in patient care. Provides clinical and administrative leadership and expertise. Facilitates an atmosphere of participative management and the development of collegial relationships. Visible, accessible, and committed to communicating effectively with staff. Promotes the profession of nursing and professional practice. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Connecticut.
  • Professional Certification is highly desirable.
  • Maintains clinical and managerial competency required for area of assignment.
  • Must have certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support upon hire or receive certification within the new employee introductory orientation period and maintain clinical competency during employment within this role.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with organization policy.

EXPERIENCE

  • Must have three (3) to five (5) years of nursing experience in an acute care setting and demonstrated leadership potential.
  • Must have three (3) to five (5) years of formal or informal teaching experience in the realm of Nursing Education.
  • Must have one or more years of experience in an administrative position and excellent presentation skills.

COMPETENCIES

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English – both verbally and in writing and possess basic computer skills.
  • Is able to operate equipment: projectors, audiovisual equipment and other equipment used in instruction and patient care.

  • Participates and facilitates staff participation in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision making. Supports and carries out the organization’s policies and procedures. Develops, evaluates, reviews, revises, and implements policies and procedures; goals and objectives; and standards of care
  • Demonstrates ability to direct educational programs covering the life span that creates an environment which promotes the provision of high-quality, evidence based clinical practice.
  • Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of educational programs that affect patient care. Participates in quality improvement projects and initiatives. Performs necessary data collection and audits related to quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Responsible for recruitment, interviewing, selection, evaluation and retention of nurse educators, clinical nurse specialists and patient care staff. Responsible for staffing and scheduling nurse educators and clinical nurse specialists. Assignments reflect appropriate utilization of personnel.
  • Promotes patient and nursing staff satisfaction through the development and delivery of high-quality orientation programs, in-services and continuing education programs that lead to excellence in patient care and excellence in nursing knowledge base
  • Promotes Nursing Education Department staff satisfaction through a participative practice environment, encouraging decision making and autonomy. Feedback from the Nursing Education Department staff is encouraged, valued, and incorporated, as appropriate.
  • Participates in planning and monitoring the budget for defined areas, providing variance analysis.
  • Whenever possible, resolves human resource concerns at the department level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
  • Participates and involves the Nursing Education staff and nursing staff in evaluative research activities and evidenced based practice initiatives when appropriate and available.
  • Coordinates educational experiences with various educational institutions ensuring the best possible clinical experience for nursing students. Fosters a climate conducive to educational experiences for nursing and other students.
  • Assesses patient care needs from a global hospital perspective and develops and implements educational programs to meet those care needs, allocating resources accordingly.
  • Interacts professionally with the nursing education staff, nursing staff, nurse managers and other department managers to determine specific educational needs and to coordinate educational programs to meet those needs. Promotes physician satisfaction by maintaining good rapport and cooperative working relations with the Medical Staff and including their input in assuring that patient care needs are met through staff education.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Utilizes critical thinking skills and sound judgment in priority setting and delegation.
  • Pursues personal and professional growth and development. Serves as a professional role model and mentor.
  • Responsible for the direction, supervision and mentoring of the Nursing Education Department staff which includes all Nurse Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists. Supports and empowers staff to embrace the mission and value statement of the organization
