Position Purpose

The Director of Nursing serves as the nursing executive for an individual Trinity Health facility. He/she is responsible for planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating patient services activities in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of MercyOne Health System. The role involves developing an environment conducive to quality patient care, collaborating with medical staff and department managers, participating in hospital goal development, and possibly assuming duties in the absence of the administrator. The director also participates in administrative call rotation.

Provides leadership, accountability, and responsibility for all nursing services at MercyOne Dyersville Medical Center, including budgeting, strategic planning, patient care management, and organizational goal achievement. Acts as a role model and change agent to improve patient care and reduce costs.

Essential Functions
  1. Collaborates with hospital leadership, medical staff, and management in decision-making, including developing and reviewing hospital mission, strategic plans, budgets, policies, and quality activities.
  2. Serves as the local Nurse Executive, working closely with MercyOne, Trinity, and affiliates. Manages care delivery standards, nursing policies, and staffing plans.
  3. Engages with hospital peers, medical staff, management, and external agencies to develop and evaluate systems and policies affecting patient care.
  4. Develops and reviews departmental policies to ensure compliance with regulations, staying informed on trends, policies, and legislation.
  5. Collaborates to enhance quality, safety, and patient experience.
  6. Prepares and monitors departmental budgets annually.
  7. Supports infection prevention and quality assurance programs to monitor and improve care quality.
  8. Develops programs for recruitment, retention, development, and education of nursing staff.
  9. Implements operational controls for resource management and conducts performance evaluations for staff.
  10. Maintains effective communication within the organization and community.
  11. Handles risk management activities in collaboration with the Risk Management Manager and CEO.
  12. Ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards.
  13. Leads evidence-based practice initiatives and participates in professional groups and community activities.
  14. Reports on quality and safety performance to the Board of Directors.
  15. Acts professionally, reflecting the organization's mission and values.
  16. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s or Post Graduate Degree required
  • Current RN license and Bachelor’s degree required
  • Clinical leadership experience required
  • Experience working with physicians and APPs required
  • At least 5 years of healthcare management experience required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postgraduate degrees in nursing or related fields preferred or a plan to obtain them.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Ability to comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures.
