Role

As the Director of Engineering – Systems & Automation, you will serve as a strategic leader at the intersection of technology, operations, and business enablement. Your mission is to design and orchestrate systems that empower teams, optimize workflows, and support scalable growth. You will champion a culture of continuous improvement, cross-functional alignment, and high-trust team dynamics, all while architecting the technological foundations of Acquisition.com’s next evolution.

This role is ideal for a systems thinker and empathetic leader who thrives on discovering inefficiencies, designing elegant solutions, and inspiring teams through clarity, collaboration, and impact. You’ll work closely with the CTO, Director of Application Engineering, and key business stakeholders to bridge communication gaps, automate business processes, and ensure our backend systems and intelligent infrastructure are built with precision and purpose.

Responsibilities

Strategic Systems Architecture & Automation

  • Lead the discovery and mapping of internal business processes to identify automation and integration opportunities.
  • Architect backend systems that are modular, scalable, and aligned with both product vision and operational efficiency.
  • Design automation-first workflows that eliminate bottlenecks, reduce manual tasks, and enhance team velocity across departments.

Business & Technology Bridge

  • Act as a liaison between technical teams and business stakeholders, translating operational challenges into elegant engineering solutions.
  • Identify and deconstruct process/business inefficiencies, guiding teams through structured problem-solving and solution design.
  • Simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences and ensure teams are working with shared context and goals.
  • Drive consistent documentation and knowledge-sharing practices that enhance operational clarity and onboarding.

Team Leadership & Culture Building

  • Build and lead a high-trust, high-impact engineering team through mentorship, empowerment, and clear expectations.
  • Cultivate a culture of curiosity, accountability, and proactive problem-solving.
  • Provide coaching and support to engineers as they grow in technical excellence, ownership, and collaborative capability.

Requirements

  • 6–10+ years of experience building and scaling complex backend systems, APIs, and distributed services.
  • Strong systems thinking mindset with the ability to connect the dots between business workflows, engineering priorities, and end-user impact.
  • Proven experience discovering, mapping, and optimizing complex business processes through automation and software solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – comfortable influencing without authority and building consensus across disciplines.
  • Track record of growing high-performing teams and cultivating a positive, results-oriented engineering culture.
  • Solid understanding of modern backend frameworks, distributed systems, API architectures, and AI integration practices (experience with LLMs and intelligent workflows is a plus).
  • Passionate about using technology to unlock human potential, drive organizational clarity, and scale operational excellence.

Results

  • Foundational Backend Infrastructure: Deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable backend systems that serve as the backbone of internal tools and customer-facing products.
  • Process-Driven Systems: Establish well-architected backend and automation systems that reflect real business workflows and deliver measurable efficiency gains.
  • Business-Tech Synergy: Create alignment between operational leaders and technical teams, ensuring systems support evolving business needs.
  • Team Velocity & Clarity: Foster a culture of clarity, empowerment, and ownership that accelerates innovation and minimizes rework.
  • Operational Intelligence: Champion data-driven automation tools that augment internal decision-making, resource allocation, and customer experience.
  • Scalable Impact: Build technical infrastructure and team practices that scale with the company’s growth, while maintaining agility and resilience.
  • Cross-Team Enablement: Build backend foundations and documentation that accelerate the work of front-end, data, and product teams.

Compensation
