The Team

As the Director, Software Engineering, Mobile, you will lead and scale Upstart’s Mobile Software Engineering team, shaping our mobile strategy. With most customer interactions happening via mobile, this is a critical growth channel. Your leadership will ensure our mobile technology evolves to meet multi-product demands, delivering a seamless, engaging, and high-performing user experience. Responsibilities include:

• Expanding our reach through application downloads and seamless account creation.
• Optimizing the mobile journey to convert visitors into applicants and borrowers.
• Maximizing customer lifetime value via easy loan management, credit access, and repayments.
• Building a strong foundation supporting all loan products through mobile technology.

Impact

• Define and drive the mobile engineering vision, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
• Lead and develop a high-performing team of engineers and leaders.
• Deliver a world-class native iOS application for loan applications, account management, and repayments.
• Establish KPIs to measure engineering efficiency, product performance, and impact.
• Champion automation, CI/CD, testing, and deployment best practices.
• Develop and execute medium- and long-term mobile strategies in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Experience leading mobile engineering teams in high-growth, consumer-facing tech companies.
• Expertise in native mobile development (iOS and Android preferred), scalable architectures, and best practices.
• Ability to scale and structure teams, balancing technical leadership with people management.
• Experience working with Product, Design, and Analytics teams to create customer-centric mobile experiences.
• Data-driven mindset with a focus on impact measurement and continuous improvement.

Position Details

Location: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin

Time Zone: US-wide, with regular on-site collaboration (4-5 days, twice a quarter), travel expenses covered.
