Qualifications

• Master's degree in Higher Education, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
• Five+ years progressive experience in disability services in higher education or related field.

• Knowledge of ADA, ADAA and Section 504 in higher education.
• Demonstrated ability handling complex student situations and crisis management.
• Knowledge of FERPA/HIPAA standards.

Director of Disability and Accessibility Support Services (Hybrid)

Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health and Well-being, the Director of Disability and Accessibility Support Services (DASS) provides leadership for the university's disability services department. You will oversee accommodation processes and department personnel. The Director also manages departmental operations while ensuring compliance with federal and state disability laws. These laws include the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. You will collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and campus leadership to promote universal access, ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for students with disabilities remove barriers to student success.

Responsibilities*

Service Delivery

• Provide leadership and oversight for the interactive accommodation process, including reviewing requests, interpreting disability documentation, and determining reasonable accommodations following the applicable federal/state laws and university policy.
• Manage implementation of approved academic, housing, testing and other accommodations along with associated services, in collaboration with campus partners.
• Maintain confidential, accurate records of accommodation requests, accessible course materials, and assistive technology support.
• Manage student access to, and instruction on, assistive technologies required for access to UM-Flint's curriculum.
• Engage prospective students at the point of inquiry regarding available support services and transition resources.
• Develop outreach strategies to promote DASS among students, faculty, and staff.
• Promote coordinated, relationship-based support across departments to provide seamless, holistic, student-focused assistance.

Strategic Leadership & Oversight

• Develop departmental goals that align with the Division of Student Affairs and UM-Flint priorities.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding, management, performance evaluation, and professional development of regular and temporary staff.
• Foster a collaborative, student-centered, and inclusive departmental culture focused on service excellence.
• Ensure application of DASS policies, campus procedures, and applicable disability legislation (ADA/ADAA, Section 504).
• Represent DASS on designated Division of Student Affairs, university, and external committee appointments as assigned.
• Serve as a member of the Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation (CARE) Team to assist with student support and crisis intervention.

Departmental Operations and Administration

• Manage the departmental budget to align resources with strategic goals and operational priorities.
• Use and manage the departmental case management software (Accommodate) for student intake, accommodation tracking, and data reporting.
• Design and complete departmental assessment plans to measure service effectiveness and track usage trends
• Manage vendor relations (e.g., captioning, alternative format software, testing technology) in collaboration with procurement services.
• Maintain inventory tracking and accessibility-related departmental purchases
• Partner with Marketing and Communications to maintain the department website and outreach strategies.

Institutional Support

• Promote universal design for learning, digital accessibility, and inclusive educational practices across campus.
• Consult with faculty and academic departments on complex accessibility and accommodation issues.
• Organize and present workshops, training sessions, and events on disability awareness and compliance
• Serve on designated UM-Flint committees to support broad institutional accessibility projects and campus accessibility planning..
• Serve as a designated Campus Safety Authority (CSA) in accordance with the Clery Act.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

• Master's degree in Higher Education, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, or a related field
• Five or more years progressive professional experience in disability services, higher education, rehabilitation counseling, or a related field, including experience interpreting disability documentation and determining reasonable accommodations
• Three or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience or management experience.
• Knowledge and practical application of ADA, ADAA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act within a higher education setting.
• Demonstrated experience navigating complex student situations and crisis management.
• Knowledge of managing confidential information (FERPA/HIPAA standards).
