Job Description
The Assistant Director assists students with diagnosed or potentialdisabilities to integrate fully into the academic, residential, andco-curricular life of the college, collaborating with campusdepartments and programs to support students’ holistic development.The Assistant Director provides leadership for the College’sefforts to ensure an accessible learning and living environment forstudents with disabilities. The Assistant Director will develop andimplement disability related accommodations and services andcollaborate to ensure, in partnership with multiple campusdepartments and offices, access to education and programs offeredto enrolled students. This is a 1.0 FTE (40 hours/week), 12-monthposition.
Direct Service to Students and Families
- Works with students to determine eligibility for accommodationsand the necessity and type of appropriate and reasonableaccommodations;
- Advises enrolled and prospective students regarding theCollege’s disability services and steps for requestingaccommodations;
- Follows up with students to evaluate the appropriateness of theaccommodations that were provided;
- Consults with faculty and administration regarding disabilitylaw regulations;
- Assists students in developing relational and communicationskills, self-advocacy, effective self-management and organizationalskills, as well as learning strategies;
- Connects students to resources on- and off-campus to encouragesuccess in the college environment.
Collaboration with On and Off-Campus Partners
- Collaborates and consults with faculty, staff, and campuspartners regarding student welfare;
- Coordinates with Counseling and Psychological Services ( CAPS), Creative Dining, the Health Center, Residential Life, and otherdepartments to provide reasonable accommodations and services tostudents with disabilities;
- Consults and collaborates with students’ off-campus providersto secure documentation and recommendations as necessary.
Training and Support
- Facilitates communication between students and faculty orstudents and Residential Life/Housing on particular academic andhousing accommodations, respectively, approved for students withdisabilities;
- Provides consultation and training for staff, faculty, andstudent leaders regarding disabilities;
- Willing to learn, work with, and recommend appropriateassistive technology and additional resources to assiststudents.
Administrative Functions
- Oversees specific academic services, including test proctoring,note-taking services, CART / CPRINT, captioning, etc.
- Keeps individual records of all student and familycommunication, decisions, and actions taken;
- Creates forms and procedures for systematic documentation,administrative ease, and record keeping;
Additional Functions
- Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation,professional protocols, and individual privacy;
- Provide a high level of service and responsiveness to studentsand their families and faculty/staff;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor;
- Committee work may be added based on a specific need of theCollege.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of all broad categories of disabilities(learning, mobility, sensory, medical, psychiatric, cognitive) andthe reasonable accommodations that might apply.
- Demonstrated knowledge of diagnostic tests and the ability tointerpret results.
- Familiarity with a variety of types of disability documentationand arranging reasonable accommodations.
- Basic knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of1973 as amended, the ADA of 1990, and the ADAAA of 2008, as well asMichigan disability laws and regulations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with theability to present to racially, ethnically, and socioeconomicallydiverse communities.
- Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of departments oncampus.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability towork across campus.
- The ability to understand the needs of the campus and workcollaboratively with students, faculty, and staff
- The ability to handle confidential and sensitive situationswith diplomacy and sound judgment.

- A minimum of a Master’s degree, preferably in RehabilitationCounseling, Education, Special Education, or other relatedfield.
Preferred qualifications:
- A minimum of three to five years of experience working indisability services in Higher Education.
- Working knowledge of assistive technology software anddevices.
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing positionfor frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as acomputers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves movingitems over 10 pounds; frequently will move between differentoffices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communicationabilities. In the case of temporary or permanent condition(s) thatrequire(s) accommodation(s), reasonable accommodation(s) may berequested.
