Qualifications

Agency Description: We provide affordable, bilingual, and accessible mental health services for people of all ages living in Napa County. Our vision is to create a community of enduring strength by equipping children, youth, adults, and seniors with the tools they need to live emotionally healthy and stable lives through programs ranging from prevention to mental health treatment.

Position Summary: The Development Director (DD) leads and oversees all aspects of the agency’s philanthropic and communications activities. Working closely with the Executive Director, Executive Leadership team, Board of Directors, and Development staff, the DD drives dynamic development, builds donor relationships, and marketing strategies that meet and exceed the agency’s goals.

Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
  • Works closely with Executive Director, Leadership Team, and Board Development Committee to create and implement annual and long-term development and marketing strategies that help meet and exceed the agency’s revenue, service delivery, and community engagement goals.
  • Leads Board Development/Stewardship Committee, strategically leveraging its membership to support community engagement and fundraising initiatives
  • Strategically supports Marketing Committee
  • Develop and monitor annual Development revenue targets and expense budget with an eye toward maximizing fundraising efficiency and ROI on expenses.
Gifts and Philanthropy
  • Develop and cultivate donor relationships as well as solicit funds.
  • Leads Mentis giving program, working closely with ED, Board, and Development committee to ensure regular (at least quarterly) engagement with all donors.
  • Builds, sustains, and models a culture of stewardship, emphasizing long-term relationship-building over continual asking.
  • Manages a personal portfolio of donors in conjunction with ED as well as supports ED with ongoing major donor engagement.
  • Works with ED, Board, and Development committee to continually identify and cultivate potential new major donors.
Events and Fundraising
  • Oversee execution of Mentis’ community engagement events, including Jeffersonian Dinner series, Blue Skies Ahead reception, Mental Health Awareness Month event, Donor breakfast, and potential other events, and annual fundraising campaigns, including end-of-year giving, monthly giving, Mental Health Awareness Month, Suicide Prevention Month, and others throughout the year.
  • Support the Development Team in project-managing all events and fundraising campaigns, including workplan tracking, budget monitoring, and supervising team tasks.
  • Oversee messaging, guest experience and strategy, ensuring that all events and campaigns are executed with high fidelity to the Mentis brand and agency values.
Institutional Funding
  • Work with Grant management consultant (who will write larger grants) and other directors on smaller/local grants, to manage annual grants pipeline, ensuring that all proposal and reporting deadlines are met and that continual prospect research identifies new funding opportunities.
  • Coordinate with program staff where needed to gather program data and other content for grant proposals and reports.
Communications & Marketing
  • Work with the Development Team to develop an engaging annual communications strategy and plan that meets the agency’s community engagement and fundraising goals.
  • Support Development Team in creating and publishing engaging materials for a variety of audiences—including press releases, columns, media pitches, e-blasts, advertisements, radio features, event promotion materials, impact reports, and more.
  • Serve as Mentis spokesperson along with other directors and board members, representing the agency in public through presentations, media interviews, and local event attendance.
Administration
  • Develop and monitor annual development budget in conjunction with ED and Finance Director.
  • Work with Development Team to analyze monthly reports on fundraising revenue and progress toward goals.
Supervision
  • Provide effective and supportive supervision for Development Team.
  • Encourage and provide professional growth opportunities.
  • Monitor performance and provide guidance, support, and oversight where needed.

Compensation is based on a variety of factors, including education, experience, and skill set.

California Pay Transparency Disclaimer: This is an Exempt position. The pay range for this position is $115,000 to $125,000/year - based on experience and track record in development.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Have at least 5 years of development and/or communications experience, ideally in a non-profit setting (not required), in roles where you engaged with a variety of development/communications strategies and activities.
  • Have at least 2 years of management experience including hiring, training, supervising, and developing staff.
  • Have a proven track record in and are comfortable soliciting major gifts and other donations and meeting revenue targets.
  • Enjoy building relationships and engaging communities from a variety of economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to collaborate productively with a wide variety of stakeholders, including fellow staff, Mentis leadership, the Board of Directors, donors, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently, take full responsibility for developing and implementing fundraising proposals and be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to bring people together.
  • High attention to detail and ability to stay organized.
  • Ability to communicate with respect, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Experience coordinating complex projects, juggling and driving forward multiple moving pieces at the same time.
  • Solid time management skills and an ability to set and meet deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously.
  • You have experience with the Microsoft Office suite, including Excel and Word, and other related software platforms.
  • Available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
