Job description

Boston Legacy FC (the “Club”) is Boston’s new professional women’s soccer team, set to begin play in the National Women’s Soccer League in 2026. We are dedicated to building a championship-caliber organization on and off the pitch. We are passionate about advancing women’s sports, investing in our local community, and redefining the future of professional soccer. As a startup club with a big vision, we’re building from the ground up—and looking for entrepreneurial team members who want to be part of something extraordinary.

The Role

The director of communications will collaborate on and help implement all communications strategies to support the club’s goals, increase brand awareness, tell the players’ stories, and grow the fan base, locally, nationally and internationally. They will interface regularly with ownership and other front office staff, sporting side staff, and various club stakeholders; maintain existing relationships with media members; and cultivate new opportunities for positive press coverage. They will be responsible for writing press releases and other regular communications both internal and external, prepping team members for media appearances, and strategically placing media opportunities in support of the team’s overall goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media stakeholders, particularly in the Boston metro area, including television, radio, and print media.
  • Monitor, assess, and respond to PR opportunities.
  • Interface with key club stakeholders and partners, including local elected officials, club investors, and league personnel.
  • Write press releases, match reports, team guides, blog posts, and other regular content.
  • Proactively pitch story ideas and secure media coverage for the team and its players.
  • Prepare and ensure consistency with internal team communications standards.
  • Be available on game days to run media processes, including press box operations, broadcast team coordination, mixed zone, and post-game press conference, both at home games and traveling with the team for away games.
  • Identify opportunities to place club messaging both locally and nationally in sporting, business, and other areas.
  • Manage media requests and ensure consistency and availability from club personnel.
  • Cross-interface with other teams, including creative, social, and revenue to ensure consistency with club goals and values.
  • Be able to manage a small team on game days in directing logistics such as media check-in and pool reporter communication, and direct a junior hire in day-to-day communications, including player transactions, match reports, blog posts, etc.
  • Work closely with coaches, players, and staff to gather insights and information for communication materials.
  • Provide guidance and training to players and staff on media interactions and public speaking, including preparing briefing materials.
  • Travel is required to regular and postseason road matches as well as preseason training.

Represent Boston Legacy FC in a positive and professional manner at various internal and external functions and in working with internal and external constituencies, including but not limited to the media and public.

What We’re Looking For

  • At least two years of experience in sports communications (or commensurate experience in another field such as sports journalism), preferably in women’s sports.
  • Strong local Boston media network and knowledge of Boston media landscape across TV, radio, and print, including smaller or more regional outlets.
  • A solid understanding of the landscape of women’s sports media, the broader history and culture of women’s sports, and the specific landscape of Boston sports coverage, including the club’s partnership with the city.
  • Able to tailor their approach depending on PR, journalistic, or other media goals.
  • Able to provide clean copy on a deadline, consistent with the team’s voice and branding.
  • Able to track and quickly adapt to evolving trends in women’s sports and media modes.
  • Proficiency with Opta Stats, Slack, Box and other communications software.
  • Proficiency with Meltwater, Brand24, or similar media/social monitoring system.
  • Comfortable interfacing professionally with varied stakeholders such as players, investors, and elected officials, and able to provide them with media education.
  • Ability to proactively facilitate media requests while exercising judgment over what does and does not make sense for club purposes.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by the soccer season.
  • Ability to lead, manage, coach, and mentor people assigned to administrative functions within the department.

Why Join Us? You’ll be part of a founding team creating a legacy—literally. Boston Legacy FC is more than a soccer club; it's a movement. We offer a unique opportunity to shape the future of a professional sports organization in one of the most passionate sports markets in the world.
