Job summary

Optum Tech, part of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking a Director of AI/ML Engineering to lead a 45+ engineering team focused on responsible AI-powered healthcare solutions. You will build, deploy, and scale enterprise AI capabilities across platforms, partnering with cross-functional teams to drive strategic innovation.

You will guide architecture decisions, promote best practices, and mentor engineers while embracing a flexible remote work model across the U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 12+ years of experience building and delivering large-scale enterprise software using modern technologies (React, Java) and cloud platforms (AWS).
• Experience leading and developing engineering organizations of 45+ team members, including talent management and delivery excellence.
• Hands-on experience building and deploying AI-powered capabilities in production environments.
• Strong ability to influence executive stakeholders and drive outcomes across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead a 45+ member engineering organization driving digital transformation through AI-enabled, customer-centric solutions and modern platforms.
• Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions with responsible AI practices.
• Mentor teams, set standards, and oversee code quality and CI/CD across groups.
• Evaluate emerging AI/ML trends to guide architecture and strategy.
• Direct portfolio management including hiring, performance, and compensation for your span of care.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver high-impact technology in healthcare.
