Job summary

Optum Technology, part of UnitedHealth Group, seeks a Senior Manager of AI/ML Engineering to lead a multidisciplinary team building, scaling, and deploying AI/ML solutions for health care operations. You will partner with business leaders to define roadmaps, drive MLOps practices, and ensure secure, compliant AI deployments.

The role supports remote work from anywhere in the U.S., with a four-day-per-week in-office requirement for Minneapolis or DC-area hires.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of progressive experience in software engineering or AI/ML engineering with Java Spring Boot.
• 5+ years of experience with core programming languages (e.g. Java).
• 3+ years of experience managing, leading, or mentoring engineering teams.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, and deploying AI/ML models, LLMs, or RAG.
• 2+ years of experience with cloud platform infrastructure (Azure/AWS/GCP) and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
• Proven track record managing the full SDLC within agile delivery methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Lead, manage, and mentor a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on enterprise AI/ML solutions.
• Define technology roadmaps, system architectures, and engineering strategy with stakeholders.
• Drive continuous improvement in MLOps, code quality, CI/CD, and model governance.
• Oversee architectural decisions, resource allocation, scheduling, and risk mitigation.
• Ensure AI/ML solutions adhere to data security, privacy, governance, and regulatory standards.
• Establish engineering KPIs and operational metrics for performance and availability.
