Job summary

CarMax is seeking a Director of AI/ML Engineering to lead and scale our AI/ML capabilities, including agentic AI, generative AI, and AI automation across pricing, recommender, ad-bidding, and computer vision. The role centers on delivering scalable, real-time models for superior customer and associate experiences.

Based in Richmond, VA, the Director will manage 50+ engineers/contractors, mentor leaders, and partner with Product and Data leadership to drive value while upholding governance,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.
• Extensive experience in AI engineering, generative AI, or Data Science.
• Experience leading large, multi-disciplinary teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• Hands-on familiarity with AI tools and platforms.

Responsibilities

• Establish AI engineering strategy spanning agentic and generative AI.
• Define and execute roadmaps for AI systems and automation pipelines.
• Lead 40+ member team of engineers and contractors.
• Collaborate with product, data science, security, and legal teams.
• Govern AI safety, bias mitigation, and governance practices.
• Partner with leadership to deliver AI/ML services at scale.
• Mentor leaders and develop talent across the team.
