Accounting Manager
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee day-to-day accounting operations and help ensure accurate, timely financial reporting. This is a hands-on management position responsible for general ledger activity, month-end close, reconciliations, financial statements, budgeting and forecasting support, internal controls, and the supervision of accounting staff.
The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, and comfortable working across multiple areas of accounting while partnering with leadership and other departments to maintain strong financial processes and accountability.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the general ledger and maintain accurate accounting records.
- Lead the monthly close process, including journal entries, accruals, allocations, and account review.
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies, unusual balances, and reconciling items.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting.
- Assist with budget-to-actual reporting, variance analysis, and financial forecasting.
- Monitor revenue, expenses, cash flow, and other financial activity to identify trends and potential issues.
- Oversee accounting for restricted funds, grants, and other specialized revenue sources as applicable.
- Review accounts payable, payroll-related accounting, accruals, and other transactional activity.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and documentation.
- Supervise, train, and review the work of assigned accounting and finance staff.
- Partner with department leaders to improve financial reporting, budgeting, documentation, and accountability.
- Support annual audits, tax filings, financial reporting, and other compliance requirements.
- Maintain and improve accounting systems, processes, reporting, and workflows.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce manual processes, and strengthen the overall accounting function.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Experience preparing financial statements, variance analysis, and financial reports.
- Previous experience supervising or reviewing the work of accounting staff.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and internal controls.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience working with accounting, expense management, payroll, and reporting systems.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and consistently meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nonprofit accounting experience.
- Experience with grant accounting, restricted funds, or reimbursement-based funding.
- Multi-entity accounting experience.
- Experience with fixed assets, leases, pledges, deferred revenue, or consolidations.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online or similar accounting platforms.
- Experience improving accounting systems, processes, or reporting.
Work Environment
This position is primarily office-based and involves regular computer and administrative work. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, reach, or lift and move items weighing up to approximately 30 pounds.
