Job summary

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory seeks an experienced Ph.D. or M.D. scientist to become Director of the Histology Core Facility.

You will provide strategic leadership, oversee daily operations, manage staff and budgets, and advance imaging technologies across cancer biology, neuroscience, and spatial biology programs. Qualifications

• An advanced degree in the biological sciences (PhD or MD) is preferred; candidates with a master’s or bachelor’s degree and extensive histology experience will also be considered.
• Experience leading a histology core or similar shared-resource facility is required.
• Proven ability to manage staff, budgets, and strategic direction for a core facility.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, supervision, mentoring, and professional development for core facility staff
• Manage and improve operational workflows, turnaround times, communication, and project tracking systems
• Develop and execute a strategic vision for the growth and modernization of the Histology Core
• Expand institutional capabilities in digital pathology, whole-slide imaging, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry
• Build integrated workflows with related cores to support spatial transcriptomics and spatial biology applications
• Consult with investigators on experimental design, tissue processing strategies, histological methods, and image analysis approaches
• Oversee tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, IF/IHC, and in situ hybridization workflows
• Develop, validate, and implement new histology, imaging, and analytical workflows
• Advise on acquisition, optimization, maintenance, and utilization of instrumentation and core technologies
• Support digital pathology and image analysis workflows, including whole-slide imaging and quantitative analysis
• Collaborate on emerging technologies including multiplex imaging, spatial transcriptomics, and computational pathology
• Support grant applications and reporting requirements for Cancer Center programs
• Participate in Cancer Center activities and governance as needed
