Job summary

The City of Long Beach seeks an experienced emergency management leader to serve as Director of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Communications. This executive role oversees citywide disaster planning, homeland security programs, and 24/7 emergency communications, guiding a ~90‑person team and managing a $16.8M budget.

The ideal candidate has eight years in emergency management with at least five in management, a Bachelor's in a related field, and strong collaboration with Police, Fire, and

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in emergency management, homeland security, public administration, public safety, or closely related field.
• Eight years of professional-level emergency management, disaster preparedness, homeland security, and/or public safety experience.
• Five years of significant management experience.
• Master’s degree preferred; substitution may be considered.
• Experience with Homeland Security grant programs is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provide executive leadership for citywide disaster preparedness, emergency response and recovery.
• Oversee Homeland Security programs and 24/7 emergency communications.
• Coordinate with Police, Fire, regional partners and community stakeholders.
• Lead modernization of critical public safety systems including CAD replacement and EOC enhancements.
• Represent the City within Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) and advocate for Long Beach’s needs.
