Job summary

The City of Long Beach seeks an experienced emergency management leader to serve as Director of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Communications. You will guide citywide disaster preparedness, emergency communications, Homeland Security programs, and grants administration.

The successful candidate will supervise about 90 staff, coordinate with Police and Fire, and lead major initiatives including CAD replacement and 9-1-1 consolidation, with a focus on readiness for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Qualifications

• Eight years of professional‑level emergency management experience.
• Five years of significant management experience.
• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
• Substitution: education may be substituted for lengthy experience and will be reviewed case by case.

Responsibilities

• Lead department for citywide disaster preparedness, emergency response and recovery, Homeland Security programs, and 24/7 emergency communications.
• Oversee budget, grants, procurement and administration to strengthen preparedness and response capabilities.
• Represent Long Beach within Urban Area Security Initiative and collaborate with regional partners.
