Our client, a growing technology company operating in a highly regulated industry, is seeking a Director of Commercial Contracts to take ownership of its customer-facing contracting function. This is a highly visible individual contributor role responsible for leading complex negotiations with large enterprise customers, modernizing commercial agreements to support new and evolving technology offerings, and partnering closely with senior leaders across Sales, Finance, Product, and Technology. The ideal candidate brings significant experience in commercial contracts, professional services, managed legal services, or legal operations, with the ability to independently negotiate sophisticated agreements while balancing deal velocity with commercial and operational risk. Experience navigating areas such as AI governance, data privacy/security, and other regulated contracting issues will be particularly valuable. This is a hybrid opportunity based in Atlanta with three days per week in office. While a JD or law license is not required, attorneys are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the commercial contracting process for customer agreements, including drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and facilitating execution.
- Lead negotiations with sophisticated enterprise customers and their procurement, legal, and business teams.
- Partner closely with commercial leadership to support sales objectives while maintaining appropriate protections for the business.
- Review and enhance contract templates, playbooks, and related processes to support the company's continued growth and evolving product offerings.
- Help develop contractual frameworks for new technology products and services, including emerging issues associated with artificial intelligence, data use, privacy, security, and regulatory requirements.
- Identify contractual and operational risks and determine when issues can be resolved independently versus requiring additional escalation.
- Work cross-functionally with stakeholders across Sales, Finance, Product, Technology, and other business functions to ensure contractual commitments can be operationalized effectively.
- Support the review and modernization of existing agreements as customer relationships evolve.
- Translate complex contractual concepts into clear, actionable guidance for business stakeholders.
- Serve as a senior internal resource for commercial contracting matters and coordinate with external advisors when specialized guidance is required.
- Help improve contracting processes, documentation, and internal knowledge to create greater consistency and efficiency across the organization.
Qualifications
- Significant progressive experience in commercial contracts, contracting advisory services, legal operations, professional services, or a related client-facing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage and negotiate sophisticated commercial agreements with large organizations.
- Strong commercial judgment and the ability to balance business objectives, contracting efficiency, and appropriate risk management.
- Experience working with technology-related agreements and complex issues involving areas such as data, privacy, security, artificial intelligence, or regulatory compliance.
- Experience supporting a technology company or another organization operating in a regulated environment is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to work effectively with senior executives and stakeholders across commercial and technical functions.
- Strong written communication skills and a track record of producing polished, high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to translate complex contractual language and risk considerations into practical guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
- Comfortable operating autonomously in a senior individual contributor capacity while collaborating across multiple functions.
- Thoughtful and effective use of modern technology and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency while maintaining ownership of work quality and accuracy.
Expected salary for this role is $160,000 - $200,000, commensurate with experience, training, skills, qualifications, and other market factors.
