Job summary

The Arc Ontario in Canandaigua, NY is seeking a Direct Support Professional to provide community-based habilitation, helping individuals build daily living skills and become more independent.

You will teach practical tasks like cooking, budgeting, transportation, and personal care, accompany participants to activities, and support growth in a respectful, person-centered setting. This full-time role offers benefits and opportunities for advancement within our agency.

Qualifications

• 18 years old or older.
• HS Diploma or GED preferred; relevant experience considered.
• If driving is required, reliable transportation and NYS license.
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
• Effective written and spoken communication.

Responsibilities

• Provides hands-on assistance, instruction, and training to individuals which will enable them to develop and/or acquire skills in various aspects of daily living which may include communication, social, recreational, and leisure activities, self or personal care, household management, travel, work-related or vocational opportunities, money management, etc. in accordance with an individualized plan of service, and following all safety considerations.
• Accompanies individuals to activities in the community to provide supervision, skills training, support or assistance, e.g. grocery shopping, banking, recreation, entertainment, medical appointments. Assists in planning group leisure activities, recreational events and community activities, career exploration and internship coaching at the request of the site supervisor.
• Serves as a role model for individual's receiving supports, demonstrating respect, as well as social or other behaviors appropriate to the particular program or community setting. Serves as a role model for other staff by using the techniques, as trained.

The Direct Support Professional for Community Habilitation at The Arc Ontario provides individualized support that helps people build daily living skills, increase independence, and participate more fully in their community. Schedule:

Requirements

• 18 years old
• HS Diploma or GED preferred and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent amount of education/and or experience preferred
• If driving is required, reliable means of transportation, NYS driver's license and safe driving record for 1 full year prior to hire date
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form
