Job summary

The Ohio State University is seeking a Dining Assistant Manager in the Student Life | Dining Services division. You will assist in managing a university dining unit serving about 2,500 people daily, supervising 10–15 full-time staff and up to 300 student employees.

This role covers diverse dining formats, oversees food production, procurement, inventories, and ensures service standards. Weekend/evening shifts and holidays may be required to meet business needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus 4 years relevant experience.
  • 1-3 years experience in food service management or related field.

Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Dining Manager assists in the management of a university dining unit.
  • The unit may have multiple service styles including traditional cafeteria, grab and go service, retail, or c-store.
  • The operation serves approximately 2,500 students, staff and guests each day; supervises as many as 10-15 full-time regular employees and up to 300 part-time student employees in a diverse organization; manages production and service of food to students, staff, guests, and special groups; manages procurement and inventory of food and related goods.
  • Supervises service and customer relations; responsible for meals served per standards; performance management and supervision of employees; supervises quality and quantity of food; orders product; takes inventories; supervises inspection of incoming food and supplies; orients, trains and coaches all employees in all aspects of facility operations; supervises staff according to customer service standards; manages student managers and student personnel program; works weekends, varying hours, special events, and holidays as needed.

Job Responsibilities

The Assistant Dining Manager assists in the management of a university dining unit. The unit may have multiple styles of service including traditional cafeteria, grab and go service, retail, or c-store. The operation serves approximately 2,500 students, staff and guests each day; supervises as many as 10-15 full-time regular employees and up to 300 part-time student employees in a diversity-valued organization; manages the production and service of food to students, staff, guests, and special groups and in addition manages the procurement and inventory of food and related goods; supervises service and customer relations; responsible for meals being served in accordance with prescribed standards; responsible for overall performance management and supervision of employees; supervises the quality and quantity of food items produced; orders product; takes inventories; supervises inspection of incoming food and supplies; orients, trains and coaches all employees in all aspects of facility operations; supervises all staff according to prescribed customer service standards ensuring prompt, effective and courteous customer service for all guests; manages the student managers and the student personnel program; works weekends, various hours, special events, and holidays as business need dictates.

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED

Desired Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in hospitality management or related field
  • 6 years relevant experience
  • knowledge of ServSafe Sanitation guidelines or similar food handler program
  • experience working with HACCP principles
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • experience managing Classified Civil Service, bargaining union member employees, and student staff
  • knowledge of computerized ordering systems
  • ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
Additional Information

The Ohio State University’s Student Life Dining Services is a premier campus dining department dedicated to serving students, staff, faculty and guests. Critical to the Residential Experience, Dining Services administers the student meal plan to approximately 15,000 residential students on the Columbus, Mansfield, Marion, Newark and Wooster campuses. This position is located at Marketplace on Neil and Cafes and will support our Marketplace operations serving a range of items including deli-style sandwiches, custom rice and pasta bowls, stone fired pizza, sushi station, smoothie bar, build your own salad and hot bar. This location also features a convenience store featuring grocery items, and much more. This location also supports 3 Cafes located within walking distance, serving espresso drinks & breakfast sandwiches.

Pay

The target starting pay rate for this position will be $17.50-$22.86 per hour. Ohio State offers competitive benefits to all regular full-time staff, including medical, dental and vision, beginning on the first day of employment, paid time off, holiday pay, OPERS retirement, tuition assistance for self and dependents, and public service loan forgiveness. The successful candidate for this position will be eligible for premium pay in addition to base pay. Premium pay is available to employees who work a minimum of four consecutive hours after 3:00 pm.
