Job description

The Office of U.S. Representative Jimmy Gomez seeks a creative and motivated Digital Communications and Press Assistant to join our communications team. This is a digital-first position for someone who is a strong writer, follows politics and the news, and wants to grow their communications skills on Capitol Hill. The assistant will help create engaging digital content, support the office’s press operation, and communicate the Congressman’s work in Washington and Los Angeles. The annualsalaryrange for this position is $55,000 – $70,000, dependent on experience and qualifications

Responsibilities
  • Draft social media copy, newsletters, press releases, statements, talking points, and other communications materials.
  • Help turn legislation, district events, constituent stories, and breaking news into engaging digital content.
  • Maintain the office’s content calendar and assist with publishing across social media platforms.
  • Monitor breaking news, media coverage, social media trends, and digital performance.
  • Support digital communications for the Congressional Dads Caucus.
  • Organize photos, videos, graphics, and other digital assets.
  • Assist with email newsletters, franked communications, and promotion of district events.
  • Help track press inquiries and prepare materials for interviews, press events, and public appearances.
  • Work closely with the Communications Director and broader communications team on rapid-response and other projects.

The assistant will initially support press operations through writing, research, monitoring, and preparation rather than serving as an office spokesperson or independently engaging reporters. Press responsibilities may grow with experience.

Qualifications
  • Strong writing and editing skills and an interest in digital communications, politics, and current events.
  • Experience with social media, communications, campaigns, advocacy, government, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Workspace, or similar programs.
  • Ability to work quickly, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail, judgment, and willingness to learn.
  • Collaborative attitude and ability to receive feedback and revise work quickly.
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside regular hours around breaking news or major events.
  • Spanish fluency and ties to California or Los Angeles are a plus, but not required.

The office is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, national origin, disability, military status, age, marital status, or parental status.
