Job summary

Stony Brook University seeks a Cataloging/Metadata Analyst to support acquisition, description, discovery, preservation, and accessibility of the Libraries' rare books, manuscripts, and distinctive collections. Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and University Archives, the role contributes to cataloging, metadata creation, and archival processing.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or foreign equivalent; 3 years of full-time relevant experience in metadata creation, cataloging, or related content services.
• Experience with library/archives management systems, digital repositories, or related technologies.

Responsibilities

• Support acquisition, description, discovery, preservation, and accessibility of rare books, manuscripts, and other distinctive collections.
• Report to the Director of Special Collections and University Archives; contribute to archival processing, cataloging, metadata creation, public services, and departmental operations.
• Create, edit, and maintain original and enhanced catalog records and metadata for rare books and archival materials.
• Apply national and international cataloging, metadata, and archival description standards; utilize AI-assisted tools when appropriate with professional review.
• Arrange, describe, preserve, and rehouse archival collections; update finding aids and support discovery and access.
• Provide reference and research assistance; supervise Special Collections reading rooms and participate in public programming.
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student assistants; collaborate on cross-departmental collection projects.
• Collect and analyze departmental data for strategic planning and assessment; support continuous improvement.
