Job summary

The Dietary Cook at MediLodge of Okemos prepares and serves meals for residents and staff, following proper food handling and safety guidelines. The role emphasizes meeting dietary needs, temperature control, and attractive presentation while maintaining a clean kitchen environment.

Experience in large quantity cooking or therapeutic diet preparation is preferred. An education level of high school diploma or GED is expected, with ServSafe or equivalent certification preferred.

Qualifications

• Six months’ experience in large quantity food preparation.
• Therapeutic diet preparation experience preferred.
• ServSafe Food Safety Certification preferred or state/county equivalent.
• Minimum of tenth grade or above; GED or high school diploma preferred.
• Must be able to read, speak, understand and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

• Review menus before food preparation.
• Prepare food for regular and therapeutic diets per menu and events.
• Prepare alternate items to meet residents’ needs and preferences.
• Use proper food handling and safety techniques per policies.
• Ensure food tastes good and is served at correct temperature and attractive.
• Maintain and file menus as per procedures.
• Follow standardized recipes to prepare menu items.
• Perform other assigned tasks.

Summary

The Dietary Cook prepares and serves food using proper food handling and food safety techniques for residents, as well as employees and special events that tastes good and is served at the proper temperature and in an attractive manner in accordance with established standards. Maintains a clean and safe working environment in accordance with established standards.

Qualifications

Education:

• Minimum of tenth grade or above
• GED or High School Diploma or above preferred

Licenses/Certification

• ServSafe Food Safety Certification preferred, or other food safety certification as required in state or county of facility.

Experience

• Six months’ experience in large quantity food preparation. Experience with therapeutic diet preparation preferred.

Job Functions

• Reviews menus prior to preparation of food.
• Prepares food for regular and therapeutic diets according to the planned menu, as well as employees and special events, as instructed by the supervisor.
• Prepares alternative items to meet residents’ individual needs and food preferences.
• Prepares and/or portions food using proper food handling and food safety techniques according to established policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations.
• Prepare food in accordance with sanitary regulations as well as our established policies and procedures.
• Makes only authorized changes to the planned menu and records the change according to established policy.
• Ensures that food tastes good and is served at the appropriate temperature in an attractive, appetizing manner.
• Ensure that menus are maintained and filed in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Utilizes standardized recipes to prepare menu items.
• Performs other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Knowledge of safe food preparation, handling techniques, and basic nutrition of food.
• Skilled in quantity food production and utilize basic math skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with residents and their family members and at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to be accurate, concise, and detail-oriented.
• Ability to read, speak, understand, and communicate effectively in English through verbal and written means.
