Job summary

Responsibilities

• Assist with cooking and meal preparation.
• Washes hands before handling food and after touching soiled items.
• Wraps, serves, and prepares food portions as assigned.
• Sets up trays and serving carts and delivers to units.
• Assists with hospital catering as needed.
• Clears trays and scrapes waste into trash cans.
• Uses equipment properly and keeps areas clean and stored.
• Keeps kitchen floor dry and clean spills promptly.
• Stocks supply shelves and checks deliveries when required.
• Attends mandatory in-service education and department meetings.
• Reports pest evidence to the Director of Dietary Services.
• Maintains customer service standards for food preparation and delivery.
• Complies with all state and federal regulations including infection control and safety.
• Follows patient rights and department schedule.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Dietary Aide assists with meal preparation, dining room assistance, dishwashing and cleaning of the kitchen. Assists in the kitchen prior to, during and after meals are served to patients, staff and community patrons. Assists in maintaining the kitchen work areas, keeping equipment, utensils and serving areas clean and orderly.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist with cooking and meal preparation.
• Washes hands before handling food to be served, before touching clean dishes and utensils and after touching anything soiled.
• Carries out certain duties routinely without direction such as wrapping silverware and filling condiment containers.
• Helps prepare, portion, wrap, cover and refrigerate food for meal(s) as assigned.
• Sets up trays and serving carts according to established procedures, delivers to unit(s) and notifies nursing departments.
• Assists with hospital sponsored catering.
• Helps clear trays from dining room return tray area(s) scraping waste into trash cans.
• Uses food preparation equipment properly, cleans and stores appropriately and reports repairs needed.
• Helps keep kitchen floor dry, wiping or mopping up spills, immediately.
• Helps stock supply shelves in storage area and may help check in deliveries.
• Attends mandatory in-service education, training and department meetings and applies information to job tasks.
• Reports any evidence of pests or rodents in the kitchen area to the Director of Dietary Services.
• Maintains exemplary customer service principles for efficient food preparation and delivery.
• Assures personal compliance to all state and federal regulations including blood borne pathogens, infection control, use of hazardous materials and fire safety.
• Assures personal compliance to patient rights.
• Complies with the schedule as established by the Director of Dietary Services.
• Utilize cash register system and financial transactions.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must be able to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English.
• Must be able to make basic mathematical calculations and understand simple instructions, either oral or written.
• One year previous kitchen or food service experience preferred.
