Job summary

Union Power Cooperative is hiring a Diesel Technician C to keep fleet vehicles and powered equipment operating safely and efficiently in line with our mission and values. The role covers maintenance, repairs, welding, and field service with occasional after-hours work and travel to job sites.

Ideal candidates hold a high school diploma, a two-year technical degree in diesel mechanics, and a valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one within six months.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Two year technical degree in automotive and diesel mechanics preferred.
  • Three years of appropriate fleet maintenance or mechanical experience is required.
  • Must possess a valid class A CDL or have the ability to obtain one within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Performs scheduled maintenance on all fleet vehicles and powered equipment.
  • Performs major and minor repairs on trenchers and underground equipment.
  • Maintains aerial equipment including hydraulics and cable replacements.
  • Troubleshoots and performs field repairs on all mobile equipment as needed.
  • Performs welding and fabrication to repair and maintain equipment.
  • Maintains shop area and assigned service truck.
  • Performs or assists in installation/maintenance/repair of other cooperative systems.
  • Occasionally escort portions of the fleet to provide support when out of town.
  • Must be available for occasional after-hours work.
  • Perform all duties assigned by supervision.

Job description

Union Power Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Diesel Technician C that will ensure that Union Power Cooperative's transportation equipment operates efficiently and meets or exceeds manufacturer's safety and operating specifications while continuously remaining focused on the Cooperative's Mission and Vision Statements, and the promotion of the Cooperative's Guiding Values.

Essential Duties of the Position:
  1. Performs scheduled maintenance on all fleet vehicles and powered equipment.
  2. Performs all major and minor repairs on trenchers and underground equipment.
  3. Maintains all aerial equipment including repairs on hydraulics and cable replacements.
  4. Troubleshoots and performs field repairs on all mobile equipment when required.
  5. Performs welding and fabrication to repair and maintain equipment.
  6. Maintains shop area and assigned service truck.
  7. Performs or assists in the installation /maintenance/repair of other Cooperative systems or equipment.

Work Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma required.
  2. Two year technical degree in automotive and diesel mechanics preferred.
  3. Three years of appropriate fleet maintenance or mechanical experience is required.
  4. Must possess a valid class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) or have the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
  5. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing, and use two-way radios, pagers, and telephones when performing functions of job.
  6. Must be able to work a modified afternoon shift two to three nights per week.
  7. Must be able to physically work under vehicles with use of creeper while lying on back.
  8. Must wear all safety equipment when repairing vehicles.
  9. Must be able to travel to the job site to repair vehicles.
  10. Perform assigned tasks with a minimum of direct supervision.
  11. Must be willing to attend courses related to work.
  12. Ability to read and interpret both digital and paper maps.
  13. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications; appropriate proficiency certifications preferred.
  14. Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  15. Periodically required to lift up to 100 pounds and carry heavy parts approximately 50 feet to repair vehicles. Toleration of heights of approximately 65 feet when testing or operating bucket truck or line truck is required.
