Job summary

LRS is seeking candidates for the Shop Manager in Training (SMIT) program. This six-month development path prepares high-potential technicians to independently manage an LRS fleet maintenance shop.

The SMIT works with a mentor to learn preventive maintenance planning, DOT/OSHA compliance, parts inventory, budgeting, and uptime optimization. Upon completion, placement as Shop Manager at an LRS location may require relocation within the region.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate degree or technical certificate in diesel technology preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engine and heavy-duty vehicle systems.

Responsibilities

• Learn to plan, schedule, and dispatch preventive maintenance and repair work across fleet equipment.
• Assist in managing shop workflow and throughputs to meet route-readiness requirements.
• Diagnose and repair diesel systems, including engines, brakes, hydraulics, and electrical.
• Monitor fleet performance metrics and identify root causes for improvement.
• Supervise and schedule a team of technicians across multiple shifts.
• Participate in safety meetings, audits, and compliance programs.
