Job summary

City of Newark is seeking a diesel engine mechanic to perform maintenance and repair on diesel engines in motor vehicles and construction equipment. Under direction, duties include diagnosing trouble, disassembly, and parts replacement, using hand tools and precision instruments.

The role requires one year of training in diesel engine repair and two years of relevant experience, with potential substitutions for training or ASE certifications.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of one year of training in diesel engine repair at an accredited community college or vocational school.
  • Two years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of diesel engines.
  • Possession of related ASE certifications or equivalent substitutions may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains diesel engines using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and machines common to the trade.
  • Diagnoses trouble, disassembles engines, and examines parts for defects and excessive wear.
  • Reconditions and replaces parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings.
  • May weld and cut parts using arc welding and flame cutting equipment.
  • May repair and maintain gasoline engines.
  • May perform a variety of mechanical tasks involved in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment.
