Job summary

City of New York seeks an Auto Mechanic (Diesel) under supervision to overhaul diesel engines and assemblies in diesel-powered vehicles. You will troubleshoot, perform field repairs to return vehicles to operation, and supervise helpers as directed.

Responsibilities include maintaining reports and inventories, training related personnel, and operating vehicles as assigned. Candidates must meet NY CDL requirements and relevant certifications.

Qualifications

• Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic specializing in automotive diesel engine repair work.
• Two and one-half years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic with helper or apprentice experience or relevant education to make up five years of acceptable experience; prorated credit for partial years.
• Possession of a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or a NY Driver License with Learner's Permit for Class B CDL; must obtain full CDL within six months; CDL must be maintained for duration of employment.
• Possible additional NY State Certifications for Motor Vehicle Inspector (Groups 1-4) and Emissions (Group D) as required by agency.

Responsibilities

• Overhaul diesel engines, transmissions and fuel systems for diesel-powered vehicles.
• Troubleshoot mechanical defects and perform minor repairs and adjustments in the field to return vehicles to operation.
• Align wheels, adjust tracks, repair steering equipment, reline and adjust brakes.
• Supervise machinist helpers, automotive service workers, and other personnel as directed; train assigned helpers or related personnel.
• Prepare reports and orders; maintain records and inventories of supplies and materials.
• Operate motor vehicles or equipment in the performance of duties.
