Summary
This position is located within Radiology Services at Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr. VA Medical Center, Memphis, TN. The Interventional Radiography (IR) Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) provides patient-centered care services while acting in an ethical manner, considering safety, effectiveness, and costs related to care delivery and planning.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Serves as entry level through full performance level DRT. Explains exams to patients, troubleshoots equipment, reports malfunctions, assists with complex procedures, and receives guidance from experienced staff.
  • Performs radiographic examinations of the skull, torso, extremities, and routine physical exams. Handles patients with severe injuries, mental status issues, deformities, or who are uncooperative.
  • Assists with complex procedures such as carotid angiography or contrast studies in collaboration with higher-grade technologists or radiologists.
  • Performs exams at bedside and in operating rooms using portable x-ray and fluoroscopic units, including in the cysto suite.
  • Ensures high-quality radiographs, minimizes patient dosage, and reduces costs. Practices radiation safety and maintains records and patient identification accuracy.
  • Explains exams to patients, monitors vital signs, recognizes allergic reactions, and may initiate CPR.
  • Monitors equipment, maintains supplies, and works professionally with staff.
  • Required to take calls and perform related duties.

Work Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday 8:00AM-4:30PM / Wednesday-Saturday 8:00AM-4:30PM.

Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • All applicants are subject to drug screening and background/security investigations.
  • Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • May require a probationary period.
  • Must complete online onboarding and provide acceptable ID documents.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • ARRT certification in radiologic technology (R), with advanced certifications as applicable.
  • Completion of a 24-month accredited radiologic technology program or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

May qualify under VA's grandfathering provision if applicable.

Grade Determinations

At GS-8 level, employees provide services independently in specialized or general radiologic technology with occasional oversight. Requires at least one year of experience at the next lower grade level. Demonstrates specific technical KSAs and potential for further skill acquisition.

Physical Requirements

Must have the physical ability to perform duties involving lifting, standing, bending, and other physical tasks without assistance. A health exam is required prior to and periodically during employment.

Education

Degrees from accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education are valid. Foreign education requires a foreign equivalency certificate.
