Summary
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) at the GS-8 level serves in an advanced developmental capacity at the full performance level. The DRT performs a substantially full range of duties in general radiology. The DRT receives guidance and directions regarding unfamiliar or unusual situations for more complex patient issues. Work is primarily performed in the general radiology section of the Imaging Department.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.
- Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments involving CT, MRI, or Mammography performed independently.
- Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by JRCERT or recognized agencies.
- Credentialing Standards: Must meet standards of the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981 and be certified as radiographers.
- Grandfathering Provision: Employees in VHA as a DRT on the effective date are considered to have met all qualification requirements. Those not meeting all requirements but who met previous qualifications may be reassigned or promoted within limits.
- English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
- Experience: At least one year of experience at the next lower grade demonstrating relevant clinical competencies.
- Assignments: Serve as staff DRTs at the full performance level, qualified to independently provide services in specialized or general radiologic technology services.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrate ability to check system operation, knowledge of calibration, patient record review, monitoring physiologic changes, tact and courtesy, anatomy knowledge, and physical requirements.
Duties
- This is an open continuous announcement until July 29, 2025, with qualified applicants being considered as vacancies arise.
- The primary responsibility is to perform radiographic and clinical duties in general radiology and OR services at the Syracuse VAMC.
- Work under guidance from lead technologists and supervisors, with general supervision from the Imaging Supervisor and physicians.
- Work Schedule: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm with rotating evenings, weekends, and holidays.
