The City of Redding is seeking a Development Services Technician I in the Development Services Department. This entry‑level clerical/technical role provides routine counter/phone assistance to customers and supports Building, Planning, and Code Enforcement staff.

Responsibilities include screening permit applications, maintaining permit records, answering inquiries about inspections and zoning, and assisting with filing and data entry. Strong customer service and organizational skills required.

Qualifications

  • Two years of relevant clerical work experience.
  • Knowledge of building, planning, and land development terminology preferred.

Job description

The City of Redding is accepting applications for the position of Development Services Technician I in the Development Services Department. The Development Services Technician I (DST I) is responsible for clerical/technical duties associated with providing routine counter/phone assistance to customers in the Development Services Department and providing support to the Building, Planning, and Code Enforcement Divisions at level I.

  • Answer routine telephone and front-counter inquiries regarding scheduling of inspections, scheduled public hearings, and questions pertaining to zoning, building, and land use regulations
  • Pre-screen permit applications for completeness and route to the appropriate staff for plan review and approval
  • Perform a variety of complex clerical work such as scanning, labeling, and updating permit records
  • Maintain files and complex filing systems in accordance with clerical procedural steps and retention requirements
Knowledge of:
  • Records management; mathematical calculations, alphabetic and numeric filing systems
  • Specialized aspects of department/division policies, practices, and procedures
  • Knowledge of relevant State/municipal codes and ordinances
  • Effective customer service skills, techniques, and interpersonal communication
Ability to:
  • Communicate and interact effectively with the public and other employees both orally and in writing
  • Enforce relevant State/municipal codes, policies and ordinances
  • Prioritize and perform complex clerical duties and make arithmetic computations with accuracy and speed
Education, Experience & Special Requirements:
  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
  • Typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent, with college course work.
  • Typical experience would include two years experience of relevant, progressively responsible clerical work as well as experience in a planning, architecture, building, or engineering office involving customer contact.
  • Knowledge of building, planning, and land development terminology is preferred.

There is currently one Development Services Technician I vacancy in the Development Services Department.

  • Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
    • Positive past employment references
    • Review of a driver history record (depending on position)
    • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
    • Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test (depending on position)
