The City of Stockton's Community Development Department seeks a Community Development Technician to support planning, engineering and building functions, process permit applications, and provide quality customer service.
Under supervision, you learn departmental rules and procedures, perform records management, assist with permit tracking and GIS-related tasks, and help with parcel maps. The role offers growth with potential leadership duties at advanced levels.
The Community Development Department is composed of the Building & Life Safety Division, Planning & Engineering Division, and the Business Operations Division. The operational center of the Department is the Permit Center. The Permit Center is where Building and Land Use permits are issued for properties within the city limits of Stockton. This position functions under the Building & Life Safety Division but the incumbent will be expected to provide quality customer service and issue a variety of permit types across the Planning and Building Divisions of the Department. This position also supports the Department's efforts to provide online services such as online permits and electronic plan review. There is currently one (1) vacancies in the Permit Center.
The incumbents will work a standard City 9/80 work week: 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Fridays, with alternate Fridays off.
Incumbents may be assigned to either level in the series, provided that they possess the required education and experience, and successfully demonstrate proficiency which meets the minimum qualifications for the class to which they are to be assigned. The Community Development Technician is distinguished from the Senior Community Development Technician in that the latter has responsibility as a lead worker and a higher degree of knowledge, expertise, and ability to independently handle progressively more difficult and complex assignments with less supervision.
Community Development Technicianis the entry-journey level class in this technical/clerical/public information/customer service series. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents learn departmental and City technical and specialized rules, regulations, policies, procedures and activities related to planning, engineering and building functions. As experience is gained, under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of assigned duties.

Equivalent to a high school diploma and two (2) years of experience which has included both substantial public contact and general office clerical work.

The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
