Job description

WXPN, a public radio station offered as a service of the University of Pennsylvania, invites applications for the position of Development Officer.

The Development Officer is tasked with building a bridge between lower membership levels and major gifts. To that end, their most significant priorities include helping create new upper membership levels; leadership annual and major gift pipeline development; and stewardship and retention efforts for individuals giving $500 – $9,999 annually. This position is deeply collaborative as functions must be closely in sync with the Membership and Individual Giving programs.

The Development Officer is an early/mid-career professional who will contribute directly to strategies that help lift operational revenue generation. They should have an understanding of moves management; experience with a CRM (preferably Salesforce) and proficiency for data organization; a collaborative spirit; professional presence; and a self-directed approach to time management.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to think strategically, solve problems creatively, and be flexible in response to new information or opportunities. Excellent communication skills, both in person and in writing, are essential. The candidate can reliably and proactively manage a varied workload and has the time management skills necessary to meet deadlines. This role occasionally requires night or weekend work. A strong interest in music and a connection to WXPN’s impact on the arts and culture community in Philadelphia are highly valued.

Job Description
Job Responsibilities:

The Development Officer will help design and administer activities that directly influence upper membership growth as well as participate in the oversight of XPN’s Leadership Circle. This includes:

Pipeline Development and Administration

  • Help design and implement 2-3 new mid-level membership levels (between $500 – $1,499 annually), including communications strategy and benefits development.
  • Manage the basic renewal cycle for a majority of leadership annual giving levels ($1,776 – $9,999 annually): solicit renewals, upgrades, and additional gifts on a regular basis.
  • Work with the Individual Giving Officer to determine any blended asks or higher-level discussions.
  • Identify and qualify select individuals who have capacity for a Challenge or Major Gift to neXtPN (non-operational fundraising priorities) and hand them off to the appropriate senior level fundraiser, typically the Individual Giving Officer.
  • Execute a robust prospecting strategy using Donor Search, Salesforce reporting, and other resources to best identify appropriate efforts for donor acquisition and upgrades.

Stewardship and Donor Engagement

  • Serve as the primary manager for Vinyl Club, XPN’s affinity group.
  • Maintain a robust effort for acquisition and work with the programming liaison to develop an annual plan of vinyl drops, events, communications, and special activities. Ensure proper alignment with the Membership Manager.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of communication with assigned XPN supporters via email, letters, phone, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Membership and Individual Giving teams to ensure proper stewardship of all donors in portfolio with impact-related reporting, thank you gifts, events, or tailored opportunities as appropriate.
  • Support efforts related to the Reverb Society, WXPN’s stewardship group for Planned Giving donors, as identified by the Director of Development.

Collaboration and Team Participation

  • Participate in Development events both on-site and off, in order to meet and engage with as many members as possible.
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with Development team members – in particular the Individual Giving Officer and Membership Manager – to ensure that solicitation and stewardship efforts are properly organized, aligned, efficient, and free of redundancy.
  • Participate in the life of WXPN as a collaborative and invested partner.
  • Contribute in meaningful ways to team meetings; solicit and offer encouragement and feedback; and serve as a positive and productive team player.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • BA/BS and 1-2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • 3+ years in non-profit Development, Membership, or comparable non-profit work is preferred.
  • Familiar with non-profit Development best practices and infrastructure, as well as the basics of public media.
