Reporting to Senior Director, Business Strategies on the Development team, the development coordinator will play a key role in the growing the institutional fundraising unit, which supports Urban in all aspects of foundation and corporate giving by developing and implementing strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward institutional donors. Through strategic engagement, increased giving, and improved retention, this position provides a unique and exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth and future direction of one of the nation’s leading research and policy organizations.

What You’ll Do

  • Support the foundation and corporate fundraising teams with information management and reporting on the revenue pipeline, donor tracking, and events.
  • Conduct in-depth research on prospective funders to identify alignment with Urban Institute.
  • Prepare briefings, strategy memos, and other materials to inform fundraising strategies and equip senior leadership and research teams for success in meetings and events.
  • Maintain complete files on fundraising activity in the CRM database, including correspondence with donors, meeting notes, proposals and appeal letters, and donor briefs and background information.
  • Track and record donations, coordinating internally with accounting and finance teams, and help craft timely and thoughtful thank you notes to donors.

  • Demonstrate strong collaboration skills, with a genuine interest in supporting colleagues and learning from others.
  • Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills, proven organizational skills, and attention to detail. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), databases, online research tools, project management tools, and other information technology, including Salesforce, a plus, but not required.
  • Work and make decisions autonomously and solve problems effectively and creatively.
  • Display an interest in public policy and Urban Institute’s mission.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to professional ethics in working with highly confidential, sensitive information.

Note: Candidates in the Washington, DC metropolitan area are preferred; however, we also welcome hybrid and remote applicants.
