We are seeking an experienced Developer III – Mainframe COBOL to join the Core Commercial Systems team supporting mission-critical healthcare claims processing applications and related business functions.
This is a hands-on application development and production support role requiring strong experience with COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working across the full application development lifecycle—from requirements analysis and technical design through coding, testing, implementation, troubleshooting, and ongoing production support.
Ideal Candidate
A strong candidate will be a hands-on Mainframe COBOL Developer with proven COBOL/JCL/DB2/CICS experience, strong production troubleshooting skills, and the ability to support mission-critical applications in a healthcare environment.
Required Technologies
- COBOL – batch and online application development
- JCL – batch processing, job scheduling, restart/recovery
- DB2 – SQL development, database access, performance tuning
- CICS – online transaction processing and support
Key Responsibilities
- Perform application systems analysis, design, development, testing, debugging, and maintenance.
- Analyze business and systems requirements and develop detailed technical specifications.
- Design, code, compile, test, debug, document, and implement complex COBOL applications.
- Develop and maintain JCL processes and batch jobs.
- Develop DB2 SQL, access databases, and troubleshoot/performance-tune database operations.
- Develop and support CICS transactions and online applications.
- Analyze production issues, determine root causes, and implement appropriate resolutions.
- Test program modifications, create test data, verify application logic, and document results.
- Evaluate the impact of program changes across related applications and processes.
- Recommend system enhancements and coordinate implementation of modifications.
- Develop functional designs, technical specifications, workflow diagrams, and supporting documentation.
- Collaborate with team members, business partners, production support, and technical subject matter experts.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
- OR qualifying equivalent experience/education:
- 4 years of job-related experience, or
- 2 years of job-related experience plus an associate degree in a related field
- 4+ years of application development, systems testing, or related experience
- Strong understanding of application development, QA, testing, and integration methodologies.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-focused, project-oriented environment.
- Strong attention to detail, teamwork, accountability, and adaptability.
