Job summary

Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) seeks multiple full-time Staff Attorneys to join our Rapid Response team, defending detained individuals against detention, deportation, and family separation. Attorneys visit detention centers, assess options, and pursue release strategies.

A central focus is getting people out of detention and back home with their families while building innovative legal strategies.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate; active California State Bar License or eligibility and willingness to waive into the CA Bar via MJP.
• Strong case management, legal research, and legal writing skills.
• Willingness to pursue new and untested legal theories.
• Experience with survivors and trauma-informed approaches is helpful; Spanish language proficiency strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide urgent, client-centered legal assistance to individuals recently arrested or detained by immigration authorities.
• Frequently travel to immigration detention centers to meet with detained individuals, conduct legal screenings, and provide timely legal counseling.
• Assess clients' immigration histories, criminal histories, and other circumstances to identify defenses and release options.
• Evaluate the legal basis for detention, eligibility for bond, and avenues for challenging detention.
• Coordinate with colleagues and partners on detention-related issues and litigation strategies.
• Provide individualized legal consultations and discuss available relief options with detained clients.
