Job summary

You will read engineering designs and customer specs to produce accurate shop drawings and bills of materials, coordinating with project managers and shop staff to ensure clarity and feasibility. You will revise drawings for accuracy and compliance with safety and quality standards, maintaining organized project documentation

Qualifications

• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, and specifications.
• Proficiency with CAD/detailing software used in structural fabrication (e.g., AutoCAD).
• Understanding of structural steel, welding practices, and fabrication processes including shop and field workflows.
• Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (AISC, AWS) and basic mechanical/structural design principles.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation.

Role Description

The Detailer is a full-time, on-site role based in Bay City, MI. This position is responsible for preparing detailed fabrication and installation drawings for structural steel, piping, and related components, based on engineering designs and customer specifications. Day-to-day tasks include interpreting blueprints and technical documents, creating accurate shop drawings and bills of materials, and coordinating with project managers, engineers, and shop personnel to ensure feasibility and clarity of designs. The Detailer reviews and revises drawings for accuracy, compliance with industry standards, and alignment with safety and quality requirements. The role also involves maintaining organized project documentation, meeting deadlines, and supporting effective communication between the drafting office, fabrication shop, and field teams.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, interpret, and prepare detailed drawings from engineering plans, blueprints, and specifications.
• Proficiency with CAD or detailing software commonly used in structural steel or industrial fabrication (e.g., AutoCAD or similar tools).
• Understanding of structural steel, welding practices, and fabrication processes, including shop and field workflows.
• Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g., AISC, AWS, or industry-specific guidelines) and basic mechanical or structural design principles.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy in measurements and documentation, and effective organizational skills.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with engineers, project managers, and shop personnel.
• Ability to work on-site in a fabrication and industrial environment, follow safety protocols, and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Preferred: Prior experience as a detailer or drafter in welding, fabrication, or industrial construction; technical certificate or degree in drafting, engineering technology, or a related field.
