Own how an AI-native product behaves on the desktop: Electron, real-time collaboration, macOS and Windows.
The Opportunity
Our client is rebuilding everyday productivity software as AI-native products, and the desktop is where heavy users spend their day. A well-funded AI applications company, backed by an established technology company in Southeast Asia and building for a global market, they need a software engineer to own the desktop experience outright. The work centers on a production Electron application with AI chat, agents and assistance built in, and on making it dependable, quick and correct in real time. The scope runs from the native layer (notifications, auto-update, deep links) to the performance profile of the app itself, on both macOS and Windows. You will be the person who knows why the app starts fast, stays light and never drops a message.
Role Snapshot
- Location: United States, United Kingdom or Asia (Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia, China)
- Work Model: Remote in most locations; hybrid in the UK and Seoul
- Employment Type: Full-time
- Compensation: Competitive, shared on intro call
- Team: Engineering, desktop
What You’ll Own
- Ship and maintain the cross-platform desktop app, built on Electron.
- Build interfaces for real-time collaboration that stay responsive as usage scales.
- Deliver the native layer: file system access, OS notifications, deep links and auto-update.
- Bring AI chat, agents and assistance into the app through backend APIs.
- Drive down startup time, memory footprint and runtime cost, profiling Electron overhead and cutting it.
- Handle large local state and long message histories without slowing the app.
- Make messages, presence and typing indicators update smoothly in real time.
- Keep the app stable on both macOS and Windows.
What You Bring
- A proven record as a software engineer.
- Production Electron applications you have built hands-on.
- Strong JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Experience with React or a comparable UI framework.
- A firm grasp of the desktop application lifecycle, along with IPC experience.
- Experience with local storage such as SQLite, IndexedDB or the filesystem.
- Experience with WebSockets or another real-time transport.
- Strong debugging and performance-profiling skills, and familiarity with how macOS or Windows behave natively.
Why This Role
- Full ownership of a platform: you are responsible for how the whole system behaves on desktop.
- Hard, specific engineering problems: Electron overhead, large local state and real-time sync, in an app people keep open all day.
- A focused stack: Electron, Node.js, TypeScript, SQL and NoSQL.
- A small, hands-on team with a high bar and a short hiring process of three to four interviews.
Not the Right Fit If
- You are a web engineer who has never shipped a production Electron app. That experience is a stated requirement.
- Performance profiling and memory work bore you. They are a large share of this job.
- You want a large team and settled processes rather than independent ownership.
