The role emphasizes accessible UX, collaboration with editorial and production teams, and managing multiple projects to tight deadlines in a publishing environment. This position reports to the Creative Director of College Design.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of professional design experience in educational publishing, digital learning, or related fields.
  • Online portfolio showing UX, layout systems, and information hierarchy.
  • Experience designing for ebooks, websites, or digital learning platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Create designs for college ebooks and complex print books with guidance from the Creative Director and senior team members.
  • Develop figure art specifications for ebooks and related interactive assets.
  • Ensure adherence to accessible design standards for digital and print formats.
  • Review ebooks and print pages for design adherence (CSS/HTML in digital, print specs).
  • Adapt book and ebook designs for high school editions and instructor editions, as needed.
  • Keep supervisors informed of each project’s status; prioritize schedules, solve problems, and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the design team, editors, digital producers, production managers, art studios, and freelancers.
  • Coordinate with project enablement team to keep projects on schedule and identify dependencies.
  • Attend production, editorial, and other project meetings as needed.

Job description

W. W. Norton is seeking a versatile Designer with fluency in digital products and traditional print products to join its Digital Publishing, Production, and Design group.

This group produces ebooks, print books, and media for Norton’s educational publishing departments.

The Designer role is responsible for a wide range of textbook project designs across both digital and print formats, including ebook and interactive content, print layouts, figure art, and video graphics.

Designers collaborate closely with various teams, including editorial, digital production, and print production, to create clear, engaging, and accessible learning materials for students and instructors.

Candidates should bring strong visual design skills, a solid understanding of accessible digital user experience principles, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven publishing environment.

This position reports to the Creative Director of College Design.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:
  • Create designs for college ebooks and complex print books with guidance from the Creative Director and senior members of the team.
  • Develop figure art specifications for ebooks and related interactive assets.
  • Ensure adherence to accessible design standards for both digital and print formats.
  • Review ebooks and print page passes to ensure adherence to design standards, including CSS/HTML in digital formats and print specifications.
  • Adapt book and ebook designs for high school editions and instructor editions, as needed.
  • Keep supervisors informed of each project’s status; prioritize schedules, solve problems, and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the design team, editors, digital producers, production managers, art studios, and freelancers.
  • Coordinate with project enablement team to keep projects on schedule, resolve process and scope blockers, and identify critical dependencies.
  • Attend production, editorial, and other project meetings, as needed.
  • Provide general assistance with other tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of professional design experience, preferably in educational publishing, digital learning, UX design, or related fields.
  • Bachelor of Arts or equivalent experience.
  • Online portfolio demonstrating experience with user-centered design, digital products, layout systems, and information hierarchy.
  • Experience designing for ebooks, websites, learning platforms, or other digital reading and instructional experiences.
  • Working knowledge of UX principles, accessibility best practices and standards such as WCAG, responsive design, and interaction patterns for educational content.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and familiarity with design, prototyping, or collaboration tools such as Figma or similar platforms.
  • Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.
  • Must be able to work full business hours.
  • Ability to interpret editorial goals and translate complex content into clear, engaging, and usable visual designs.
Compensation and Benefits*
  • Salary range: $60-65K.
  • All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and considerations.
