Job summary

General Motors Company is seeking a Design Lead Technician to spearhead the daily technical work for Transmission and Drive Unit design. You will lead a team to deliver robust, manufacturable, launch-ready transmission and electric drive unit products from concept through launch.

You will translate system requirements, assign work, set priorities, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality designs while coaching designers and aligning with GM processes and standards in a hybrid work environment

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Eight or more years of product-design experience with technical leadership.
• Experience designing transmissions, electric drive units, or automotive systems.
• Advanced knowledge of packaging, interfaces, manufacturing, and serviceability.
• Experience creating and reviewing 2D drawings and PMI with GD&T.
• Proficiency with NX and Teamcenter for complex modeling and release.
• Ability to lead design studies, evaluate alternatives, and recommend solutions.
• Strong communication, organization, and risk-management skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily technical direction to a team of TDU designers and set priorities.
• Lead design and integration of complex transmission and electric drive unit components.
• Translate requirements into robust component designs and layouts.
• Coach designers through reviews, standard work, and best practices.
• Direct resolution of complex design issues involving gears, shafts, housings, and interfaces.
• Develop, review, and release 2D drawings and PMI with GD&T and clear intent.
• Ensure alignment with interfaces, manufacturing capabilities, and product-definition requirements.
• Lead DFM/DFA reviews with Manufacturing Engineering and suppliers.
