Overview

Ashby is seeking a Design Engineer who combines design and engineering work. This role collaborates closely with the leadership team and is part of a growing Design Engineering department. The team is expanding from five to over ten in the coming year.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement features with a strong emphasis on both UX/UI and engineering quality.
• Redesign mobile web app by engaging with customers, wireframing new flows, implementing the design system, and turning wireframes into an implementation.
• Build flexible, composable components in the design system to help engineers create consistent setup wizards across the product.
• Help product engineers improve information hierarchy and scannability of design assets to aid recruiters and other users in quickly parsing information.
• Expand and enhance the in-house design system and consult on bespoke design work needed by product engineers.

Seniority/Levels

• Junior Design Engineer — up to 2 years of industry experience as a designer or engineer with projects that demonstrate visual taste and talent in UI/UX and engineering.
• Design Engineer (This Posting) — includes both Mid and Senior levels with 2+ years of continuous experience in engineering or design, with experience shipping products to hundreds of users.
• Staff Design Engineer — professional contributor to our design system and features used by hundreds of users, with iterative improvements based on user feedback.

Technology Stack

TypeScript (frontend & backend), React, GraphQL, Node.js, Postgres, Redis. Proficiency in TypeScript, React, and CSS is expected; backend experience is a plus.

Interview Process

• Three rounds: introductory call, a second round (technical screen or design take-home), and a deep-dive interview focused on a past design system or project.
• Three interviews with opportunities to ask questions; no LeetCode or whiteboard exercises.
• We provide guidance and feedback even if an offer is not extended.

Your First Three Months

Onboarding is designed for an exceptional start: a streamlined dev environment, day-one product changes, and a structured 30/60/90-day review to calibrate expectations. You will be paired with a peer for questions and pair programming, with team training sessions on culture, product, engineering process, and architecture.
