Job summary

Office of the Sheriff seeks men and women for a career in law enforcement. Deputy Sheriff-Recruit will attend a POST approved academy, 26 weeks of study and fitness training. Upon successful completion, recruits graduate and are sworn in as Peace Officers and promoted to Deputy Sheriff.

The Office operates detention facilities and patrol services countywide, with many specialized assignments. This is a continuous recruitment with an eligible list valid for 12 months.

Qualifications

• License: valid California motor vehicle operators license; out-of-state license accepted during application.
• Education: US high school diploma, GED or higher education credential.
• Citizenship: US citizen or permanent resident eligible for citizenship.
• Age: must be 21 years or older at appointment.
• Physical: able to meet health standards set by County Medical Consultant.
• Vision: 20/20 uncorrected, or 20/30 corrected vision per eye.
• Hearing: no more than 25 dB loss at 500, 1000 or 2000 Hz.
• Background: includes polygraph, medical and psychological evaluations.

Responsibilities

• Attend a POST-approved police academy (26 weeks) with academic and physical training.
• Graduate and be sworn in as a Peace Officer and promoted to Deputy Sheriff.
• Pursue specialized assignments within the department as available.
• Participate in a continuous recruitment process with an eligibility list valid for 12 months.

Education

High school diploma / GED equivalency / California high school proficiency certificate, or higher degree

Two-year, four-year or advanced degree from an accredited college or university
