Job summary

Gwinnett County Government is seeking a Jail Officer to perform security duties, process inmates, and support court-related functions in a high-security facility. The role includes handling evidence, supervising inmate movements, and maintaining accurate records.

Regular training and on-duty shifts are expected. Incentives include a signing incentive up to 10% of the starting salary and opportunities for promotion to Jailer Senior and Jailer Master.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must obtain Basic Jail Officer Certification within six months.
  • Must be 18 years of age and hold a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to calls within the jail and perform general law enforcement duties.
  • Search for contraband and ensure proper handling of evidence.
  • Testify in court and serve court orders as required.
  • Assist in processing paperwork for inmate admittance or release.
  • Maintain daily logs and oversee inmate headcount and security.

$55,919.24 (includes 6% pay incentive for a bachelor’s degree)

Gwinnett County Jailers are eligible for promotion, after successful completion of job requirements, to:

Jailer Senior $53,030.00

Jailer Master $56,211.00

Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

  • Learns department policies and procedures and how to perform general law enforcement duties to include: responding to calls within the jail, conducting searches for contraband, ensuring the proper handling of evidence, testifying in court, and serving court orders, and special conditions within the Jail Operations Division.
  • Assists in processing paperwork for the admittance or release of inmates or detainees; searching individuals and inventorying, confiscating, or distributing property; and maintaining an accurate headcount of the facility .
  • Assists in ensuring the security and safety of the inmates by making sure they are not injured by themselves or by other inmates; performing routine cell and inmate searches to remove contraband materials and weapons; and completing applicable forms and documents and enforcing violations with write-ups.
  • Assists other agencies in transferring inmates to other facilities and ensuring proper documentation and recording is completed.
  • Issues clothing; performs inmate meal distribution and commissary distribution; overseeing recreation activities and oversees operation of cafeteria and laundry services.
  • Provides orientation information to inmates, which includes visitation sign-ups, medical, mental health information, GRIP information, court dates, and bail and bond information.
  • Escorts inmates or detainees throughout the facility for special programs, medical appointments, and mental health appointments, and court appearances.
  • Maintains daily logs of shift activities prepare varies reports.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D.
Licensing Requirements (positions In This Class Require)
  • Valid Driver’s License from state of residency.
  • Must have 18 years of age.
  • Must obtain and maintain Basic Jail Officer Certification within six months.
  • Must successfully complete field training through the County.

Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, oils, odors, extreme temperatures, and intense noises.

This position may require: 24 hours on call assignment, overtime, or working weekends, holidays, 10-hour, 12-hour, and rotating shifts.
