SALARY: The salary range for this position is $93,495.46 to $136,175.80 for Schedule A, and $93,495.46 to $129,367.01 for Schedule B. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range. For current Judiciary employees, salary upon promotion or advancement will be an increase of 5% of base salary, not to exceed the maximum of the range, or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater. Judiciary employees hired prior to June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule A. Newly hired individuals, and Judiciary employees hired on or after June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule B.

The Office of Attorney Ethics (OAE) acts as the investigative and prosecutorial arm of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in discharging the Supreme Court's constitutional responsibility to supervise and discipline New Jersey attorneys. The mission of the OAE is expressed by the New Jersey Supreme Court in its precedent: to preserve public confidence in the Bar and to protect the public from lawyers who fail to comport with the high professional standards articulated in the New Jersey Rules of Professional Conduct.

This position presents a unique opportunity to be responsible for a case from inception to conclusion; Deputy Ethics Counsel investigate matters from the docketing of a grievance, prosecuting appropriate cases from complaint through oral argument before the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Moreover, due to the broad nature of the work at the OAE, Deputy Ethics Counsel are exposed to a variety of practice areas and have the opportunity to become subject matter leaders in the area of ethics and professional responsibility.


The New Jersey Judiciary is seeking well-rounded attorneys proficient in handling a caseload of investigations, capable of litigating disciplinary hearings and able to prepare well-drafted pleadings and legal briefs. The OAE seeks candidates with highly developed organizational, decision making, interpersonal, and conflict management skills who are adept with legal research and word processing technology. The Deputy Ethics Counsel will direct assigned investigators in the conduct of disciplinary investigations.


REMOTE WORK: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, in addition to installing a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet, you will be required to have high speed home internet access.

  • Manage a diverse caseload of disciplinary matters within the time goals set forth in R. 1:20-8 as part of an investigative and litigation team.
  • Direct auditors and investigators in the investigation of highly complex cases which are often financial in nature. Prosecute disciplinary matters virtually and in person before special ethics masters and hearing panels.
  • Prepare investigation reports, complaints, file motions, write briefs, and conduct legal research in assigned disciplinary cases.
  • Appear before the Supreme Court of New Jersey and the Disciplinary Review Board. Render advice on disciplinary cases to the District Ethics Committee.
  • Develop and present CLE programs to the Bar and members of the District Ethics Committees.

Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.

Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school and three years of experience as an Attorney-at-Law performing legal research and analyzing and evaluating legal documents, rules, regulations, and/or legislation.


Litigation experience including bench or jury trials strongly preferred.

Substitution: One year of experience as a Judicial Law Clerk may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

License: Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active.

Driver's License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.

Special Note: Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting. All data received will be kept in strict confidence except to inform the individual of the findings and what action will be taken as a result of this information.

Residency Law: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person may request an exemption from that requirement from the Employee Residency Review Committee in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development on the basis of either hardship or employer critical need.
