Job summary

Indian Health Service (IHS) Sanitation Facilities Construction is seeking a Deputy District Engineer to lead planning, design, and construction of water, sewer, and solid waste facilities for American Indian Tribes.

The role requires supervising engineers and staff, directing project design activities, and ensuring data quality and compliance across the district. A federal background check and licensed engineer requirements apply.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree with ABET accreditation or equivalent required.
• Professional licensure (PE) or registration preferred; FE/PE pathways recognized.
• Experience supervising engineers and staff; ability to manage complex projects.

Responsibilities

• Direct planning, design, and construction for water, wastewater, and solid waste facilities.
• Supervise project engineers and staff; make staffing and reassignment decisions.
• Direct design activities, prepare/ review engineering documents and reports.
• Ensure data quality in the district’s STARS system.
