Job description

The Deputy State Director will play a critical leadership role in building alignment, coordination, and power among progressive organizations in Virginia. They will help drive strategic planning and campaign execution, strengthen field infrastructure, and serve as a connector between state-based partners, national allies, and additional stakeholders. This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives at the intersection of management, strategy, and coalition-building, with a strong commitment to equity and grassroots organizing.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in electoral field program management, superbinterpersonal skills, planning and decision making skills, passion for coalition work, and thecapacity to build trust with an inclusive, collaborative, and diverse coalition of partnerorganizations. This is an ideal role for someone with a proven track record in campaignwork and who is ready to take on more responsibility. This is a management position on a small team and reports directly to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

Campaign Planning & Leadership : Facilitate innovative and creative solutions tochallenges related to electoral and issue campaigns, short- and long-term campaignplanning for statewide and ballot level electoral and voter education plans. Createtransparency to support evaluation, troubleshooting, effectiveness, and efficiencyin progress towards goals. Facilitate ongoing conversations and collectiveactionable steps toward equity in the work of the coalition and partner members.

Coalition Coordination: Plan and facilitate regular coalition meetings fororganizations to create and share plans as well as progress toward goals; identifyproblems and new opportunities toward winning elections and advancing legislative and advocacy goals. Directly manage and provide leadership in the state with the development, implementation, and analysis of state campaign plans, with an emphasis on direct voter contact programs. Support state director in coalition work including in approaching campaign, electoral, and coalition work through a lens of racial equity.

Model principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion internally and externally. Beculturally competent and support work to build power with BIPOC-led and focusedpartners.

Project Management: Support the Executive Director in implementing the coalition’sorganizational goals. Support team creation of work plans and team benchmarksfor success. Manage special projects to deliver on team goals, both internal andexternal.

Partner Campaign Support: Advocate for partner organizations and elevatequality programs in the state, assist organizations in identifying potential
resources, and move resources to partner groups whenever possible. Supportorganizational and team focus on quality service to partners and stakeholders.Lead, organize, and facilitate coordinated and/or collaborative partner events,including coalition meetings, training and direct voter contact activities. Developand execute training curriculums to advance the partner's program, as well ascreate and organize resources. Support program implementation through the voterfile and other related tools including basic VAN administration.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ideal candidates will have at least 3+ years experience in progressive politicalcampaigns, organizing or coalition work.
  • Proven ability to design and execute field programs with direct voter contact.
  • Strong project or staff management experience, with a collaborative leadership style.
  • Commitment to racial equity, social justice, and grassroots movement-building.
  • Ability to work independently and to drive and manage own workload; ability to manage several tasks / projects concurrently and prioritize work effectively by making and meeting team goals.
  • Ideal candidates will have experience with standard presentation materials including Google Suite (Google Sheets, Google Slides, etc.) or Microsoft Suite (Excel, Power Point, etc).
  • Ability to lead and support the creation and development of written reports and products to tell the story of Virginia and support the coalition. Ability tounderstand and synthesize data, using it to inform strategy and problem solveacross diverse audiences.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of and experience with the Virginia political and advocacy landscape.
  • Proficiency with VAN and campaign tools or willingness to learn.
  • Experience managing staff towards goals and building a team.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Experience or training in race equity / anti-racist frameworks; a generalunderstanding of how power intersects with gender, race, ethnicity, sexualorientation and class in organizing and electoral work.
