Job summary

FDNY seeks a qualified Associate Fire Protection Inspector to join the Bureau of Fire Prevention in New York City. The role involves supervising Fire Protection Inspectors, reviewing inspections, and coordinating with other city agencies on fire and life-safety codes.

Strong leadership and compliance with safety standards are essential. Applicants must have five years of full-time experience in relevant fire protection fields and hold a NYS Driver’s License.

Qualifications

• Five years of full-time experience in the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables; or related safety roles.
• Education and/or experience equivalent to the above, with college/technical specialization in fire science, chemistry, physics or engineering may substitute for up to 4 years of experience.
• New York State Driver's License required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and train lower-level Inspectors within the CDA Unit.
• Review work conducted by field Inspectors and cover site inspections when needed.
• Conduct field performance evaluations and audits of Fire Protection Inspectors in the CDA Unit.
• Serve as acting Chief Inspector when the CI is on leave and coordinate with other agencies on code interpretations.

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for its citizens, visitors and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and other emergencies. We accomplish this 24/7 by identifying fire and life safety hazards; creating, revising, and enforcing the New York City Fire Code; reviewing plans for critical systems designed to protect and alert building occupants; licensing qualified companies to install and service fire protection equipment and systems; certifying individuals to monitor fire safety conditions; and educating individuals and businesses about fire safety. In addition, the Bureau of Fire Prevention is critical partner with the Bureau of Fire Operations (Firefighters) and Bureau of Fire Investigations (Fire Marshals), providing assistance and guidance during post-fire incidents and investigations; and coordinating with other City agencies on matters concerning fire and life safety. The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors, lawyers, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers work together to save lives in New York City.

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a Full-time Deputy Chief Inspector in the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Reporting directly to the Chief Inspector, the successful candidate will: A Deputy Chief Inspector for the Bureau of Fire Prevention's CDA unit reports directly to the Chief Inspector of the Suppression group. He or She will directly supervise and train all lower-level Inspectors within their command structure. They will review all work conducted by a field Inspector and if necessary, cover and witness any construction site inspection when a subordinate Inspector is out on leave. A Deputy Chief Inspector will conduct field performance evaluations and audit any jobs conducted by any lower level Fire Protection Inspector within the CDA Unit. Another responsibility for Deputy Chief Inspector is to be an acting Chief Inspector when their CI is on leave (Medical, Annual, any other Leave). This includes approving CityTime, evaluations if necessary, and maintaining the rules for an Inspector like Code of Conduct and attendance issues. This position also entails field meetings with other agencies and units within the FDNY to correspond with any variance or code interpretation for the senior leadership of Fire Prevention to complete any decision that maybe needed

ASSOCIATE FIRE PROTECTION INSP - 31662

Minimum Qualifications

1. Five (5) years of full-time experience in or more of the following:
   • a. the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables;
   • b. the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials;
   • c. the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored or houses to detect potential fire and explosion hazards;
   • d. the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years.

License Requirement

A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York.

Preferred Skills

ONLY Permanent AFPI’S Level II and Level III may apply. Previous supervisory experience in plan examination, installation and signing off water base suppression systems for this posting
