Grand Valley State University, through the Annis Water Resources Institute, seeks a part-time Deckhand on the W.G. Jackson to support cruises and safety operations in Muskegon, MI.

This temp hourly role involves assisting with science equipment, vessel security, and guest interactions. The position requires comfort with open water, ability to work on a moving deck, and a willingness to perform maintenance tasks.

Qualifications

• Ability to swim and work on open water.
• Stand for extended periods and climb ladders.
• Follow verbal and written instructions from the Captain.
• Stay calm during drills and emergencies.
• Willingness to perform cleaning and maintenance.
• Comfort interacting with the public.
• Strong attention to detail during inspections.
• Represent GVSU and AWRI professionally.

Responsabilités

• Represent Grand Valley State University and AWRI professionally.
• Maintain vessel safety and security during cruises.
• Lead emergency evolutions (man overboard, fire, flooding).
• Oversee weight handling and scientific equipment operation.
• Assist science instructors and researchers as required.
• Host occasional dockside tours and demonstrations.
• Ensure equipment is secured and ready for sea.
• Learn and follow safety procedures I.A.W. Ref (c).
