Job summary

Grand Valley State University is seeking a Deckhand to support safety and security onboard the WG Jackson during cruises. Responsibilities include inspecting equipment, following the captain's directions, and maintaining cleanliness and order on the deck.

The role requires strength, stamina, and the ability to respond quickly during emergencies while interacting with passengers and instructors. This is an on-site position in the United States with hourly compensation.

Qualifications

• Ability to swim and comfort working on open water.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and work on a moving deck.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from the Captain, especially during drills and emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Represent Grand Valley State University and AWRI professionally.
• Maintain proper vessel security and safety on deck.
• Carry out duties of the Deckhand as outlined in PMS program.
• Lead in emergency evolutions (man overboard, fire, flooding) and stay calm under pressure.
• Ensure all ship's equipment is secured and ready for sea; maintain aft deck safety.
